Coating materials

These days virtually any material can be applied by thermal spraying. The variety is so great that any desired functional surface properties can be provided.

Thermal spraying enables hard material layers to be applied to components, inexpensively and quickly, for instance with a wear-resistant oxide ceramic or hard metal layer. The variety of processable materials is meanwhile vast, and this permits functional services to be customized. In principle any material that has a defined melting point and does not disintegrate under spraying conditions can be thermally sprayed.

Typical coating materials are:

  • Pure metals, such as Aluminum (Al), Copper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo), etc.
  • Alloys, such as Nickel Chrome (NiCr), Nickel Aluminum (NiAl), Aluminum Bronze (CuAl), etc.
  • Ceramic (Oxide), such as Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3), Chrome Oxide (Cr2O3), Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2), Titanium Oxide (TiO2), etc.
  • Cermets, such as Wolfram Carbide Cobalt (WCCo), Chrome Carbide Nickel Chrome (Cr3C2/NiCr), various metal-ceramic compounds
  • Pseudo alloys, such as Nickel Graphite
